GHMC Ward Increase to 300 Sparks AIMIM Targeting Claims

GHMC Ward Increase | Hyderabad, Dec. 17: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) increased its wards from 150 to 300. AIMIM Malakpet MLA Ahmed Balala questioned the move. He alleged it targets his party.

MLA Balala raised concerns during a special council meeting held at GHMC head office. He claimed the redistricting dilutes AIMIM’s voter base in Old City areas. “Why did GHMC increase wards to 300 now?” Balala asked. He suggested political motives behind the decision.

GHMC Ward Redistricting Details

GHMC announced the ward expansion in 2025. The Telangana government approved it to improve local governance. Each new ward now covers fewer residents. This aims to enhance representation and service delivery.

Previously, GHMC managed 150 divisions across 6.25 lakh population pockets. The 2019 census showed uneven distribution. Larger wards strained resources, officials stated.

The change follows the Telangana Municipalities Act amendments.

AIMIM holds 44 seats in the 150-ward setup. Redistricting could split strongholds like Chandrayangutta and Charminar. MLA Ahmed Balala demanded transparency. He urged the state election commission to review boundaries..

Background shows GHMC’s last major redraw in 2009. Urban growth since then hit 10 million residents. The move aligns with national trends.

For instance, BMC in Mumbai also expanded wards recently. GHMC officials defend it as administrative necessity. No official response addressed targeting claims yet.
