GHMC Ward Reorganisation Sparks Political Uproar Across Hyderabad
GHMC Ward Reorganisation | Hyderabad, Dec. 11: The Telangana government has expanded the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation by merging 27 urban local bodies and restructuring the Telangana Core Urban Region into 300 wards.
A Gazette notification was issued on Tuesday, and GHMC began accepting public objections to the new ward structure.
Officials say the reorganisation follows legal norms, yet political parties argue that confusion persists due to the absence of detailed ward maps.
Leaders claim that the lack of clear boundary maps has created uncertainty among residents and party cadres.
Authorities maintain that the maps will not be released until the government completes the review process. They also state that population balance guided the revision.
GHMC Ward Reorganisation | Ward Changes Across Old and Newly Merged Areas
Before the merger, GHMC had 150 wards. Population levels across these wards varied sharply. The government raised the total to 247 by creating 97 new wards.
Officials say each ward was designed around a population of about forty thousand with a small variation allowed.
Parties allege that several older wards remain unchanged. They also claim that some dense pockets such as Borabanda received additional areas without clear justification.
In the merged local bodies, 53 new wards were formed. Bandlaguda Jagir was divided into three wards. Narsingi was split into Narsingi, Gandipet, and Kokapet wards.
Manikonda was divided into Manikonda and Neknampur. Jawaharnagar became a single ward. Several municipalities including Dammaiguda, Nagaram, and Pocharam remained single wards.
Others such as Peerzadiguda, Boduppal, Pedda Amberpet, Turkyanjal, Adibatla, Badangpet, Meerpet, Shamshabad, Ameenpur, and Nizampet were divided into multiple wards.
Political Parties Objections
The Old City saw a major rise in ward numbers. The area earlier had around fifty five wards. That number has now crossed seventy. AIMIM legislators met the GHMC Commissioner to raise their objections to the changes.
All major political parties have voiced concerns. AIMIM and BRS legislators met the Commissioner on Wednesday. BJP leaders will submit their objections on Thursday. They may take legal action if issues remain unresolved.
The GHMC Council will discuss the reorganisation in its meeting on December 16. Mayor Vijayalakshmi and Commissioner Karnan reviewed budget issues and the ward structure on Wednesday.
GHMC received forty objections on the first day. The corporation will review all objections over seven days and then submit a report to the government.
The final notification will be issued after the state reviews boundaries and clears political objections.
