Hyderabad: Opposition parties are preparing to introduce a resolution in Parliament for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Sources say the draft of the resolution is already ready. Meanwhile, the opposition is likely to submit a formal notice this week.
A senior TMC MP said that all opposition parties have taken this decision together and unanimously. The leader also confirmed that a draft of the impeachment resolution against the Chief Election Commissioner has been prepared. He said the opposition will try to introduce the resolution in both Houses of Parliament at the same time.
Opposition plans joint move against CEC Gyanesh Kumar
The leader alleged that the Election Commissioner had completely misused his position. However, no further details were provided about the allegation. Even so, opposition parties have continued discussions over the proposed resolution.
It is learnt that other parties in the India alliance support the move. They have also taken part in preparing the draft resolution. Meanwhile, party leaders are planning to collect signatures from Members of Parliament to move the resolution formally.
According to a leader involved in the process, the resolution requires a minimum number of signatures before it can be introduced in Parliament. At least 100 signatures are required from the Lok Sabha. Similarly, at least 50 signatures are required from the Rajya Sabha.
Procedure similar to removal of judges
Leaders also said the process to remove the Chief Election Commissioner follows a strict legal procedure. Therefore, the same method used to remove a High Court or Supreme Court judge will apply.
Under this process, Parliament must first receive the required number of signatures. Then the resolution can be formally introduced in both Houses. After that, lawmakers will debate the matter before taking any decision.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders continue consultations to gather support for the move. They also plan to submit the notice for the impeachment resolution soon.
