  • Haleem Prices Likely to Rise in Hyderabad Ahead of Ramzan

Meanwhile, rising prices of key ingredients have triggered concerns among customers and restaurant owners alike.

According to estimates, the price of haleem could go up by Rs 10 to Rs 15 per plate. Last year, most reputed restaurants sold haleem at Rs 250 to Rs 280 a plate. However, input costs have increased over the past year. Therefore, outlets are preparing for a possible hike this season.

“If not a huge hike, there will be some increase in prices as some commodities have turned costly in the last one year,” a source said. Owners also pointed to the rising cost of meat and ghee. “Meat and ghee prices have increased and it will impact haleem prices,” they said. However, they added that the market remains highly competitive.

Restaurants Weigh Costs as Demand for Haleem Grows

Restaurant owners say they must monitor competitors before fixing the final price. “The haleem market is competitive. Before fixing the price, we have to check competitors. Earnings are not high and the profit margin is meagre,” said the owner of haleem outlets. As a result, outlets are cautious while deciding prices.

Haleem has become synonymous with Ramzan in Hyderabad. During the month, it is widely available across the city. However, for the rest of the year, only a handful of restaurants serve it. Popular outlets such as Pista House, Shah Ghouse Restaurant, Café 555, Bahar Café, Sarvi, Mehfil, Madina Hotel and Shadab sell haleem during Ramzan.

Meanwhile, restaurants in newly developed areas including Nagaram, Keesara, Kushaiguda, Abdullapurmet, Hayathnagar, Bungulur, Turkayamjal, Kompally, Nanakramguda and Chandanagar have also started offering different varieties. “There is a huge demand for haleem during Ramzan here. Every year, we hire a local cook and prepare a mutton variety of haleem,” said a restaurant owner at Abdullapurmet.

Haleem is prepared using chicken, mutton or beef, along with ghee, wheat, spices and dry fruits. Madina Hotel at Pathergatti introduced haleem in 1956, making it accessible to common people. Until then, it was served at royal palaces.
