Heavy Fine For Every Dog Bite: Supreme Court Warns States

Delhi/Hyderabad, Jan 13 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court has once again made key comments on the issue of stray dogs.  The Supreme Court, which heard the matter on Tuesday, warned that heavy fines will be imposed on the states if steps are not taken to curb the menace of dogs.  It made it clear that compensation will have to be paid for every dog bite.

The Supreme Court stated that the impact of a dog bite will last a lifetime on the victim.  On this occasion, the court also expressed its indifference towards those who feed stray dogs.

“If a child dies in an attack by dogs fed by an organization, then who should be held responsible? Shouldn’t the organization be held responsible for that loss of life? States should take appropriate steps to prevent the menace of stray dogs.  Otherwise, the states should pay the huge compensation we have prescribed for every dog bite and every death caused by dog attacks,” the court clarified.

Speaking about those who feed stray dogs, the bench said, “If you love dogs so much, take them to your home and raise them.  They say that the issue of stray dogs is an emotional issue.  Are your emotions oly about dogs?  We are equally concerned about humans.  We will not tolerate a situation where dogs roam the streets and terrorize people.

It is known that in the wake of the increasing incidents of attacks by stray dogs across the country, the Supreme Court issued a key order in November last year.  It ordered that those near educational institutions, bus stands, railway stations, sports complexes and other public places be shifted to shelters.  The hearing on this issue is ongoing in the Supreme Court.  (Maxim News)
