According to an official statement from the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, an easterly atmospheric wave over the southwest Bay of Bengal is driving the current weather pattern. Because of this system, rain is likely across several parts of Tamil Nadu for at least two days. Meanwhile, the department said the intensity of rainfall may vary by region, with some districts facing heavier spells during the day.

Under the heavy rain alert, the IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, and Namakkal districts. In addition, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Ramanathapuram are also likely to receive intense rainfall spells. Meteorological officials noted that rain in these areas may come with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places. Therefore, the risk of localised flooding and waterlogging in low lying areas may increase. Road traffic may also face temporary disruption.

Meanwhile, farmers and residents in vulnerable regions have been advised to take precautionary steps. The weather department asked people to closely monitor updates and follow instructions from local authorities. Also, officials stressed the need for caution during thunderstorms, especially in open areas and near water bodies.

For Chennai and its suburban areas, the IMD has forecast moderate rainfall through the day. Thunderstorms and lightning may occur at several locations. However, officials said widespread flooding is not expected at present. Even so, intermittent showers may cause inconvenience, particularly during peak traffic hours. Therefore, commuters may need to plan travel accordingly.

Looking ahead, the IMD said moderate rainfall is likely to continue across Tamil Nadu on Monday as well. However, the intensity may gradually reduce in some interior regions. No fog conditions have been forecast anywhere in the state during this period. Interestingly, despite rainfall, night temperatures may rise. The department projected that minimum temperatures could increase by up to three degrees Celsius above normal, leading to warmer nights.

Authorities have also urged fishermen to keep track of weather bulletins. Sea conditions over parts of the Bay of Bengal may remain unsettled. Meanwhile, the public has been advised to stay alert as the weather situation continues to evolve.
