Heavy Rainfall Brings Old City To A Standstill, Roads Inundated
Hyderabad, July 23 (Maxim News): Incessant rainfall on Wednesday threw normal life out of gear in several parts of Hyderabad’s Old City, with major roads turning into virtual streams and commuters battling waterlogging and traffic snarls.
Key stretches such as Dabeerpura, Falaknuma, Bandlaguda, Aramgarh, Chatrinaka, and Khilwat Road were submerged under a thick sheet of water, making it extremely difficult for motorists and pedestrians to move about.
The unexpected downpour, which began in the early hours, continued through the day, overwhelming the city’s drainage infrastructure and causing water stagnation in low-lying areas. Local residents reported overflowing manholes and clogged stormwater drains, leading to concerns over public safety and potential health risks.
“Every year it’s the same story. One heavy rain and the roads are flooded. We can’t even step out to buy essentials,” said a resident of Falaknuma.

Traffic was severely impacted in several parts of the Old City, with two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws especially struggling to navigate submerged roads. Emergency services and GHMC personnel were seen attempting to pump out stagnant water and clear blockages, but commuters were left stranded for hours during peak travel times.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel and have deployed response teams to monitor critical points prone to waterlogging. With more rainfall forecast over the next 48 hours, residents are being asked to remain cautious and report emergencies through official helpline numbers.
