Hyderabad: A Hindu businessman was murdered in Bangladesh just days before the country’s general elections. The incident has added to concerns over repeated attacks on members of the Hindu community. The killing took place in Mymensingh district on the night of February 9, according to the information provided.
The victim was identified as Sushen Chandra Sarkar, a 62 year old rice trader. He was a resident of Dakshina Kannada village. He ran a rice business at Bogar Bazaar in the same district. Police said the murder took place at around 11 pm. Unknown assailants attacked him with a sharp weapon inside his shop.
According to police, the attackers left Sarkar’s body inside the shop after the assault. They then locked the shop from outside. It later emerged that the assailants looted lakhs of rupees from the premises before fleeing. When family members found Sarkar lying in a pool of blood, they rushed him to a hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the murder has drawn attention due to a similar recent incident in the same district. In that case, a Hindu man named Deepu Chandra Das was brutally beaten to death. His body was later burnt. That incident had already caused a sensation. Therefore, the killing of another Hindu businessman in Mymensingh has raised fresh alarm.
Sarkar’s son, Sujan Sarkar, spoke about the incident after his father’s death. He said that after killing his father, the assailants also stole money from the shop. He added that the family had been running the rice business for a long time. He also stated that they had no enmity with anyone.
Later, Sujan Sarkar demanded strict action against those responsible for the crime. He said the killers should be immediately arrested and severely punished. The family is seeking justice through legal action. However, no information was provided about arrests at the time of reporting.
The murder comes at a sensitive time, with general elections scheduled to be held in three days. Attacks and murders against Hindus in Bangladesh have not stopped, as highlighted by this latest case. Therefore, the incident has added to wider concerns about safety and law and order during the election period.
