The figures highlight the scale of fatalities linked to the virus over the past five years and underline the continued public health challenge posed by HIV.

According to official data shared in the Rajya Sabha, 44,140 people died due to HIV in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana between 2020 and 2024.

Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel provided these details while replying to a question raised by a Member of Parliament. The figures show that Andhra Pradesh accounted for a larger share of HIV deaths, with 32,642 fatalities reported during the five year period.

Meanwhile, Telangana recorded 11,498 HIV related deaths in the same timeframe.

The data also places the Telugu states within the wider national picture.

During the same five years, 1.81 lakh people across the country died due to HIV, the minister informed the House.

Therefore, the combined deaths in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana form a significant portion of the national total, drawing attention to the continued impact of the virus in these regions.

At the national level, concerns have also emerged about the spread of HIV in specific sectors.

Meanwhile, the National AIDS Control Organisation had issued a warning last year about the widespread of the HIV virus in the information technology sector.

The organisation noted that modern lifestyles influenced by foreign work cultures were contributing to increased HIV transmission.

As a result, it advised all state AIDS control societies to remain alert. It also called for an increase in HIV testing, especially among people working in this sector.

However, there has been a contrasting trend in Telangana in recent years.

Earlier, the Telangana State AIDS Control Society stated that the HIV infection rate in the state was gradually declining.

The data showed that the infection rate stood at 0.44 in 2024. Later, by 2025, this rate fell slightly to 0.41.

This decline indicates some progress in controlling new infections, even as the death figures remain a cause for worry.

Therefore, the latest HIV deaths data presents a mixed picture. While infection rates show a slow decline in Telangana, the number of deaths over the last five years highlights the need for sustained awareness, testing, and treatment efforts across both Telugu states and the country.
