Hyderabad, Sept. 5: A 34-year-old private doctor from Kothapet lost Rs 1.49 crore after allegedly falling victim to a fake online trading platform.
The victim told police that he joined a Telegram group related to stock trading and investment opportunities on May 4. Soon after, he was contacted by people claiming to be investment and trading professionals.
He was later approached on WhatsApp by a woman who identified herself as Myra Sharma. Several others subsequently contacted him and promoted various stock trading and investment programmes.
Believing their claims, the doctor downloaded a trading application through a website shared by the accused. Between May 4 and June 29, he transferred a total of Rs 1,49,33,593 in 59 transactions to the application.
Fake trading platform used to trap Hyderabad doctor
The victim became suspicious when he tried to withdraw his money. The accused allegedly told him that his “credit score had fallen” and that he could not withdraw the funds.
They then allegedly demanded additional payments, claiming the money was required to resolve the purported credit score issue and release his investment.
Realising that he had been duped, the doctor approached the Malkajgiri cybercrime police and lodged a complaint.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the persons behind the fake trading platform and trace the funds transferred by the victim.
