Hyderabad Fake Dairy Alert! Authorities Crack Down on Risky Milk Substitutes This Festive Season
Hyderabad, Mar 14 (Maxim News): With concerns rising over the quality of Dairy Analogues—non-milk substitutes used as alternatives to dairy products—food regulators in Hyderabad have intensified surveillance ahead of the festive season.
Regulatory authorities across all states have been instructed to increase monitoring throughout March to prevent food adulteration and mislabeling, as demand for dairy products is expected to surge during festivals.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive stating:
“Considering the increased consumption of dairy products during the festive season, the ongoing surveillance will focus on Dairy Analogues this month.”
Health Risks and Concerns Over Dairy Analogues
In recent months, dairy analogues—especially analogue paneer—have faced criticism due to potential health risks. Made from vegetable oils, starch, and additives, analogue paneer is widely used in street food and restaurants, raising concerns over safety and lack of standardization.
Other non-milk substitutes classified as Dairy Analogues include:
- Soy milk and almond milk
- Analogue paneer
- Vegan yogurt alternatives (made from soy, almond, and coconut)
- Vegan cheese
- Coconut milk
Regulatory Guidelines on Dairy Analogues
According to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, Dairy Analogues are products where milk components are partially or fully replaced by non-milk ingredients but still resemble traditional dairy products in appearance, texture, and function.
Importantly, Dairy Analogues are not classified as milk, milk products, or composite milk products. If standardized dairy products are modified by replacing major components like milk fat or protein with vegetable-based ingredients, they fall under this category.
As per Sub-Regulation 2.1.1.3(f) of the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, non-dairy products must not be misrepresented as milk or milk-based products.
With stricter monitoring in place, authorities are working to ensure food safety and prevent misleading dairy substitutes from flooding the market this festive season. (Maxim News)
