Hyderabad: Fog Accidents Claim Lives, Authorities Urge Caution

Hyderabad, December 15: Dense fog is turning deadly across several regions, as reduced visibility continues to trigger serious road accidents.

Vehicles on highways often appear and disappear suddenly, leading to crashes that have claimed many lives.

Therefore, weather officials and police have urged motorists, especially those on long-distance travel, to remain alert for the next 15 days.

They warned that thick fog could lead to repeated accidents if drivers lower their guard.

However, officials said fog-related accidents remain high every year across the country. Sources stated that more than 30,000 road accidents occur annually nationwide, with a significant share linked to fog conditions.

Meanwhile, travel between 4 am and 9 am has become extremely risky, as visibility drops sharply during early morning hours. As a result, authorities stressed the need for caution during these hours.

Hyderabad Fog Accidents Trigger Fatal Crashes Across States

Meanwhile, several fatal incidents have already been reported this December due to fog accidents. On December 14, reduced visibility on National Highway 161 in Medak district led to a motorcycle crashing into a tractor trolley.

Four members of the same family died on the spot while travelling to their native village to vote in sarpanch elections. Earlier, on December 10, a car lost control and overturned near Taroda in Jainath mandal of Adilabad district, killing three people.

Similarly, on December 7, two youths died after a car hit a divider on the Hyderabad–Lalapet road while they were travelling from Keesara to Tarnaka.

Also, on December 12, a private travel bus plunged into a gorge on the Chinturu–Maredumilli ghat road in Alluri Sitharama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. In that accident, nine tourists died and 22 suffered serious injuries. Officials suspect dense fog prevented the driver from seeing the road clearly.

Later in the month, several more deadly incidents occurred. On December 7, five youths died after a car lost control and plunged into a pond near Jalalpur in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

On December 13, a car hit a bike at Nanakramguda in the early morning hours, killing two youths, including a CBIT student.

Then, on December 14, a youth died in a bike accident in Malakpet after returning from a birthday celebration. On December 30, two youths died when a speeding bike rammed into a tipper at Tellapur.

Meanwhile, accident data from Hyderabad and surrounding areas remains alarming.

In 2024, Hyderabad Commissionerate recorded 2,745 accidents, causing 227 deaths. Cyberabad Commissionerate reported 3,829 accidents with 842 deaths, while 178 accidents occurred on the Outer Ring Road alone. Also, Rachakonda Commissionerate recorded 3,207 accidents, leading to 653 deaths.

Weather Warnings and Police Advisory

Therefore, the Meteorological Department warned that strong cold winds are likely between December 16 and 22 across the Telugu states.

Due to dense fog at night and early mornings, visibility remains very low. Police advised drivers to use low-beam lights, avoid high beams, reduce speed, and keep safe distance. They also urged motorists to avoid night and early-morning long journeys whenever possible.
