Cybercrime officials explained that fraudsters send masked links that appear to come from banks or government departments. They often use names like RTOChallan.apk, PMKisanYojana.apk, ElectricityBill.apk, HMWSSB.apk, Creditcard.apk, and rewardpoints.apk. They said criminals push people to install these apps outside the Google Play Store by promising faster service or special benefits. Once installed, the fake apps request access to SMS, contacts, notifications, and screen sharing.

Officials said these permissions allow criminals to view activity on the victim’s device. They added that the malicious APK files capture OTPs, bank login details, and card information in the background. They also said some apps include Remote Access Tool features that let fraudsters control the device and make unauthorised transactions. According to the police, many fake APKs look like genuine bank or government apps to gain trust.

The police shared a clear advisory to help citizens stay safe. They asked people to avoid APK files sent through links on SMS, WhatsApp, email, or social media. They also said people should not open links that promise rewards, cash back, or KYC updates. They advised users to check app permissions and deny access when requests seem unnecessary. They suggested keeping mobile phones updated and using reliable antivirus software. Officials reminded the public that no bank or government office asks for OTPs, PINs, or passwords.

The police urged citizens to report suspicious activity to the Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or through the online complaint portal cybercrime.gov.in. They said quick reporting can help prevent further financial damage and assist ongoing investigations.
