Hyderabad, July 31: Heavy monsoon showers lashed Telangana on Thursday, significantly reducing the state’s rainfall deficit and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for parts of north Telangana as reservoirs across the Krishna and Godavari basins witnessed a sharp rise in water levels.
The recent spell of rain has brought relief to farmers and improved water availability for irrigation. However, it also disrupted normal life, causing flooding, traffic congestion and damage to infrastructure in several districts.
According to the IMD, Telangana’s rainfall deficit has improved from 33 per cent about two weeks ago to 10 per cent as of Thursday morning. Despite the improvement, 13 of the state’s 33 districts continue to record deficient rainfall, with Yadadri Bhuvanagiri reporting the highest deficit at 65 per cent. Hyderabad also remains rain deficient.
The IMD has issued a red alert for isolated heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal and Jagtial districts. Several locations in north and east Telangana recorded rainfall between 130 mm and 200 mm.
Bejjur in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district received the highest rainfall at 188 mm, while Chandulal Baradari recorded the highest rainfall in Hyderabad at 38.8 mm.
Continuous rainfall in the upstream catchment areas has increased inflows into reservoirs across the Krishna and Godavari river basins, easing concerns over irrigation water availability.

The heavy rains also led to several flood-related incidents. In Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, a temporary bridge connecting Kondapalli and Gollagudem villages collapsed after floodwaters surged through the area. A Bolero vehicle was stranded before local residents rescued its occupants.
In Mulugu district, a 40-year-old man went missing after being swept away while taking a bath in Jampanna Vagu before visiting the Medaram temple. Search operations are continuing.
In Nirmal district, a 45-year-old tribal woman was swept away by floodwaters on Wednesday while returning home after collecting her pension.
Heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across Hyderabad on Wednesday night, with the impact continuing on Thursday.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police reported slow-moving traffic at Taj Krishna, Virinchi Hospital, Khaja Mansion towards Masab Tank, and on the Panjagutta Flyover towards Praja Bhavan.
Authorities have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel, drive cautiously on waterlogged roads and follow official traffic advisories as rain is expected to continue through Thursday night.
