Hyderabad Student Denied US Visa After Struggling With Technical Questions

Hyderabad: A US F-1 student visa applicant from Hyderabad faced an unexpected hurdle during his interview at the US Consulate. What began as a routine conversation about academics and university choices quickly turned into a technical quiz. Despite answering confidently, the student’s visa was denied under Section 214(b).

The student explained that the interview started as expected, with questions about his education and his decision to attend Indiana University Bloomington for a master’s in data science. Things changed when the officer suddenly began asking technical questions, specifically about the differences between an array and a linked list, and basic concepts in linear regression.

Despite staying composed and answering honestly, the officer denied the visa and suggested the student reapply.

Why Technical Questions Might Be Asked

While rare, technical questions can sometimes be part of F-1 visa interviews, particularly for students in STEM fields. Experts believe consular officers might use these to assess whether the student genuinely understands their program and has serious academic intentions—criteria central to F-1 visa eligibility.

The student now plans to reapply, hoping to better prepare for both standard and unexpected questions in his next interview.
