Hyderabad to Boost Women Empowerment, SHGs Expansion Targeted
Hyderabad, Jan. 21 (Maxim News): The Telangana government will strengthen women empowerment initiatives in Greater Hyderabad with a focus on expanding self help groups and completing key infrastructure projects on a time bound basis, said Hyderabad district in charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.
The minister chaired a review meeting with GHMC officials at the corporation headquarters on Wednesday to assess the progress of development works across the city.
He said the government aims to enhance women’s economic independence as part of its goal to create one crore women entrepreneurs statewide.
Women empowerment drive and GHMC project review
Ponnam Prabhakar said the number of self help groups in Greater Hyderabad should increase from over 72,942 to one lakh.
He directed officials to enroll every woman from below poverty line families into SHGs. He added that livelihood training would be provided with SETWIN support to ensure sustainable income generation.
He announced that 40 to 50 electric buses would be allotted to urban SHGs, following the success of similar initiatives in rural areas. He stressed that HCITI, SRDP, and Strategic Nala Development Programme works must be completed swiftly with strict timelines.
The minister said Hyderabad’s clean city brand depends largely on solid waste management and ordered regular sanitation drives.
He also asked officials to prioritise air quality improvement, groundwater conservation through mandatory soak pits, proper street lighting, and effective public grievance redressal.
Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi thanked the government, officials, and citizens for supporting the GHMC council during its five year term.
TGRTC Chairman and Managing Director V C Sajjanar said electric buses are being increased in phases to reduce pollution and improve public transport connectivity.
GHMC Commissioner said sanitation monitoring responsibilities have been shifted to engineering staff and assured time bound completion of HCITI, SRDP, and desilting works. (Maxim News)
