Hyderabadi Student Kidnapped In US, Family Gets Ransom Call

Hyderabad: An alarming incident unfolded as an unidentified individual contacted the family of a Hyderabad student studying in Cleveland, USA, claiming the young man had been abducted by a drug-selling gang. The caller, purporting to reside in the US, issued an ultimatum to the student’s father,
residing in Nacharam, Medchal-Malkajgiri: pay up or risk the sale of the 25-year-old’s kidneys.

Expressing his shock, Mohammed Saleem, a building site supervisor, recounted the distressing encounter in a TOI report, stating, “The person on the phone didn’t show any proof that my son was with them. I tried to tell them that we’d do what they said, but they got mad and wouldn’t talk anymore.”

Saleem’s son, Abdul Mohammed, pursuing a Masters in IT at Cleveland University since May 2023, had ceased contact with his family since March 7. Concerned relatives in the US complained with Cleveland police, prompting a lookout notice for Abdul Mohammed.

The caller demanded an immediate payment of $1,200 but left the mode of payment unspecified. “We heard someone crying softly just before the caller talked. We’re not sure if it was our son.”

Saleem disclosed. Cleveland police, in their lookout notice, urged residents to report any sightings of the missing 25-year-old, describing him as 5-foot-8-inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen at 1700 E, 13th Street in Cleveland,

In WhatsApp messages to Abdul’s father, the caller conveyed the severity of the situation and threatened to withdraw assistance if payment was not received within 30 minutes. Faced with this ordeal, the family sought aid from the Indian consulate in Chicago on March 18 to assist in tracing Abdul.

Reacting swiftly, Saleem alerted a relative in Washington to inform Cleveland police about the call immediately after the distressing conversation took place.
