While continuing to investigate complaints of encroachment in ponds, parks, and government spaces at the field level, the Operation Nala program is being launched. The field is being prepared for the removal of structures obstructing the flow of flood water in the canals.

Citizens are requested to provide information regarding encroached and obstructed canals. Several government departments have recently removed encroachments in Manemma Basti in Ramnagar on the complaint of locals. HYDRA hopes to take similar steps in other areas as well. The expansion of canals in the areas of GHMC and upto Outer Ring Road is currently being prioritized.

Canal Expansion To Prevent Water Logging

GHMC has 370 km of major canals and 1250 km of floodwater drains. The capacity of their flow system is only 2 cm per hour. Roads are getting waterlogged due to high rainfall in a short period. Colonies and settlements next to the canals are getting submerged. In the context of urbanization, the situation in the city is becoming more and more difficult. As a part of the Hi-City program, canal expansion, and development works are being carried out to check these problems. Parallel to this, it seems that the government is planning to remove encroachments.

In this order, it has been decided to remove only non-residential structures without disturbing the people who have been staying there for a long time. In the previous survey conducted by GHMC, it was found that there are more than 12 thousand encroachments on the canals of the city. About 35 percent of this is non-residential construction. Two and three-storied buildings were constructed across the nalas. In some places, the 30 feet-wide canals have shrunk to less than ten feet. It is noteworthy that in some other places, the nalas are not more than two or three feet wide. Due to this, the surrounding areas are getting flooded.  In the past, plans were made that Rs. 10 thousand crores would be required for the comprehensive development of the canals.

Lack of funds, removal of encroachments, rehabilitation, and other difficulties did not materialize.  “We have decided to take steps to improve the flood flow system by removing non-residential encroachments, ” says HYDRA sources. HYDRA is also investigating complaints of encroachment in ponds. Ranganath is examining the ponds. In this background of rain, the FTOL is estimated in principle based on the water reserved in many ponds.  (Maxim News)
