Imran Khan Health Rumours Dismissed By Adiala Jail Officials
- Adiala jail authorities say Imran Khan remains healthy in custody
- PTI seeks clarity amid rising rumours and denied family meetings
Adiala jail authorities have rejected rumours claiming that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan died in custody. Officials said he has not been moved from the prison and remains “in good health”. The response came after a wave of social media claims sparked concern across Pakistan. Local media reported the clarification on Thursday as officials tried to control speculation.
In a statement, officials at the Rawalpindi prison said, “There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala jail. He is fully healthy and receiving complete medical attention.” They also called the rumours “baseless” and stressed that the jail continues to ensure his well-being. Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023 and faces several cases, including corruption and terrorism, after his removal from office in 2022 through a no-confidence motion.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has demanded an immediate clarification from the government about the rumours. The party asked authorities to arrange a meeting between Imran Khan and his family without delay. The issue gained momentum because his sisters have not been allowed to meet him in recent weeks. Their repeated attempts to reach him led to further questions about his whereabouts. Social media users added to the confusion by circulating claims of his death on X.
PTI said the government must “clearly dismiss and clarify the rumour and immediately arrange a meeting between Imran and his family.” The party stated that the government holds direct responsibility for protecting Imran Khan’s “security, human rights and constitutional rights”. It also pledged to take legal and political steps to counter the rumours.
On Tuesday, media held a long sit-in outside Adiala jail after Imran Khan’s sisters were denied permission to meet him. The protest continued for hours and marked the second such demonstration in recent weeks. Aleema Khan, one of his sisters, said, “Who knows, maybe Imran has been shifted. Why are they not letting us meet him?” Noreen Khan said the family would continue its efforts until they were allowed access and called it unfortunate that court orders were not being followed.
Police earlier stopped Aleema Khan, Noreen Khan and Uzma Khan at Factory Naka. PTI supporters then gathered, shouted slogans and began a sit-in. Aleema Khan said she would not leave until she met Imran Khan. She also questioned why so many police personnel were deployed at the site. Later, she criticised the treatment she and her sister received last week and described female police personnel as “shameless”. PTI had accused police of manhandling the sisters when they visited Adiala jail earlier.
