- Imran Khan Toshakhana case leads to prison terms and fines
Hyderabad: Imran Khan Toshakhana case reached a major legal conclusion on Saturday, as a Pakistan accountability court sentenced jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years of imprisonment each. The court delivered the verdict in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case, which relates to alleged fraud involving state gifts.
According to the case details, the matter concerns gifts received from the Saudi government in 2021. These gifts were part of the Toshakhana, which deals with state gifts received by public office holders. The court examined the allegations and later pronounced the judgment after hearing the case. The sentencing marked another significant development in the legal proceedings involving the former prime minister.
Special court judge Shahrukh Arjumand announced the verdict at the high security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The court held both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi guilty under multiple legal provisions. As part of the sentence, the court awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to each of them under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code. This section deals with criminal breach of trust. In addition, the court imposed seven more years of imprisonment under different sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10 million on Imran Khan and Rs 10 million on Bushra Bibi. Therefore, apart from the prison term, both will face financial penalties as part of the punishment. The announcement took place inside the jail due to security considerations, as Imran Khan is already in custody in other cases.
The Toshakhana case has remained under focus due to its link with alleged misuse of state gifts. Meanwhile, the sentencing has added to the legal challenges faced by the former prime minister. Officials present during the proceedings followed standard legal protocol as the judge read out the order.
Later, the verdict drew attention across political and legal circles in Pakistan. However, the court order stands as delivered. The accountability court based its judgment strictly on the charges and sections cited in the case. With this, the Toshakhana 2 case reached its trial stage conclusion with sentencing. (Maxim News)
