According to the information available, gold prices in India have increased by about 394 percent in recent times. Many travellers believe gold abroad costs less and offers better quality. In this context, the Centre revised the baggage regulations. As a result, passengers arriving in India by air or sea can bring limited gold jewellery duty-free under the India new baggage rules.

However, the exemption comes with clear conditions. The benefit applies only to those who have lived abroad for more than one year and are returning to India, or to tourists of Indian origin. The jewellery must be for personal use only and not meant for sale. Officials have made it clear that these rules do not apply to gold biscuits or gold bars.

Earlier, women passengers could bring gold jewellery worth up to Rs. 1 lakh, while men could bring jewellery worth up to Rs. 50,000, within specific weight limits. These older limits were linked to both value and weight. The sharp rise in gold prices led to difficulties for travellers, even when they stayed within the permitted weight.

Under the earlier system, women could bring up to 40 grams or jewellery worth Rs. 1 lakh, whichever was less, without duty. Similarly, men could bring up to 20 grams or jewellery worth Rs. 50,000. Now, the government has completely removed the value limit. From today, customs duty exemption depends only on the weight of the jewellery.

Officials revealed that under the India new baggage rules, customs authorities will no longer calculate the value of gold jewellery for duty-free allowance. Instead, they will consider only the weight. This change offers relief to travellers at a time when gold prices are soaring. Meanwhile, passengers are advised to follow the conditions strictly to avoid issues at customs.
