- US modifies fact sheet on pulses imports and tariffs
- India US trade news highlights changes by Trump team
Hyderabad: The India US Trade Deal has seen fresh changes after objections from India. The recent trade deal between the US and India is likely to be signed in March. However, after releasing a fact sheet, the US government made several revisions within hours following India’s concerns.
Earlier, the White House released a fact sheet outlining key elements of the India US Trade Deal. It stated that India would reduce tariffs on pulses imported from the US. However, this reference triggered opposition in India. India is the largest producer of pulses in the world. It also ranks number one in pulses consumption. Therefore, concerns grew that reducing tariffs on pulses imports would severely affect Indian farmers.
Amid the pulses import issue, the US stepped in and revised the document. In the second fact sheet, the reference to India reducing tariffs on pulses imports was removed. This move followed objections raised from India. As a result, the updated India US trade news reflected a softer position.
Meanwhile, the US also changed language related to procurement commitments. The initial fact sheet stated that India was “committed” to buying $500 billion worth of US products. Later, the wording was modified to say India “intends to buy” the products. This change marked a clear shift in tone.
In addition, the Trump team adjusted its position on digital services taxes. Initially, it claimed that India would eliminate digital services taxes. However, the revised version stated that India was committed to discussing rules that would address barriers to digital services.
Thus, the India US Trade Deal continues to evolve ahead of its likely signing in March. The swift revisions to the fact sheet underline the sensitivity around trade terms, especially on pulses imports and digital services. Further developments are expected as both sides move closer to formalizing the agreement.
