- Indian Super League season to feature 14 clubs, 91 matches
Indian Super League | The future of the Indian Super League has finally become clear, ending weeks of uncertainty around India’s top football tournament.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that the Indian Super League will begin from February 14.
Mansukh confirmed that a total of 14 clubs will take part in the competition this season. The announcement has brought relief to football fans and stakeholders who were unsure whether the league would take place.
The Indian Super League had faced doubts due to the absence of a commercial partner and certain legal complications.
As a result, questions were raised over whether the tournament would be conducted at all. However, clarity emerged after a meeting involving the Sports Ministry, the All India Football Federation, and representatives of all 14 ISL clubs. Sources indicated that all pending issues were resolved during these discussions, paving the way for the new season.
Meanwhile, Mandaviya also clarified that traditional rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will participate in the Indian Super League this season.

Their inclusion is expected to add more excitement and fan interest. The confirmation has reassured supporters, especially in football loving regions, who were concerned about the league’s stability and continuity.
All India Football Federation president Kalyan Chaubey provided further details about the tournament format. He said the Indian Super League will be played in a home and away format.
According to him, the league will feature a total of 91 matches. He added that the federation is currently working on the required logistics to ensure smooth conduct of the tournament.
These preparations include scheduling, travel, and operational arrangements across host cities.
Later, Chaubey also announced that the I League, which was temporarily suspended, will also be conducted. He stated that 11 clubs will participate in the I League this season.
A total of 55 matches will be played in that competition. This announcement has been welcomed by clubs and players who were waiting for clarity on the domestic football calendar.
Therefore, with both the Indian Super League and the I League set to go ahead, Indian football is expected to regain momentum.
Officials believe that resolving administrative and legal hurdles was necessary to protect the sport’s growth. As the February 14 kickoff approaches, attention will now shift to match schedules, team preparations, and fan engagement across the country.
