According to media, the reins of governance have now moved to a three member council. This marks a major political shift in Iran after many years under the Supreme Leader’s authority. However, officials stated that the arrangement is temporary. The council will handle the responsibilities of governing Iran for now.

Meanwhile, the Guardian Council remains one of the most powerful bodies in Iran after the Supreme Leader. It consists of 88 members. They are also called the Assembly of Experts. Under the country’s law, this group holds the power to elect Iran’s Supreme Leader. The panel includes Shiite clerics elected for an eight year term. It is also responsible for protecting the constitution.

Later, reports revealed that the three member council was formed with President Masoud Pezeshkiian, the head of the judiciary, and a jury member of the Guardian Council. However, the council will only temporarily handle the responsibilities of governing Iran. Further decisions about the Supreme Leader are expected to follow as per the constitutional process.
