Jaishankar Attends Khaleda Zia Funeral in Dhaka

Hyderabad: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to attend the funeral of former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia, marking India’s official representation at the state ceremony. Jaishankar attends Khaleda Zia funeral as the senior most Indian envoy to convey condolences on behalf of the government and people of India.

Jaishankar landed in Dhaka at 11.30 am on a special flight, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha. He was received at the airport by Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma. Officials of the Indian mission also attended the reception.

The funeral of Khaleda Zia is scheduled at 2 pm at Manik Mia Avenue. Foreign dignitaries, political leaders, and representatives from several countries are expected to attend. Therefore, security arrangements have been strengthened across the area.

Jaishankar attends Khaleda Zia funeral with state honours planned

Following the funeral prayers, Khaleda Zia will be laid to rest with full state honours at around 3.30 pm. She will be buried beside her husband, former president and freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, officials said.

Khaleda Zia died in Dhaka on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. She was 80. She served as prime minister three times and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for many years. During her career, she remained a central figure in Bangladesh politics.

India and Bangladesh share close historical and diplomatic ties. Therefore, Jaishankar attends Khaleda Zia funeral as part of established diplomatic protocol. The visit also reflects India’s respect for Bangladesh’s democratic institutions and political leadership.

The External Affairs Ministry said Jaishankar would represent both the government and the people of India. The ministry added that India values its relationship with Bangladesh, which continues across governments and political parties.
