Hyderabad: Veteran Tamil actor, director, writer and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 73.
According to sources, Bhagyaraj was rushed to Apollo Hospital after he collapsed. Doctors attempted to revive him, but he could not be saved.
He is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
A legendary filmmaker who changed Tamil cinema
Bhagyaraj was one of Tamil cinema’s most influential filmmakers, known for his unique storytelling, sharp screenplays and relatable characters. His films combined humour, emotion and social themes, earning him a devoted audience across generations.
Some of his most celebrated films include Mouna Geethangal, Andha Ezhu Naatkal and Mundhanai Mudichu. Many of his works continue to be studied for their screenplay structure and storytelling.
He began his film career as an assistant director to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja on the 1977 classic 16 Vayathinile. He later emerged as one of Tamil cinema’s most successful writer-directors, often writing, directing and acting in his own films.
Bhagyaraj redefined the image of the Tamil film hero by portraying ordinary men who relied on intelligence, wit and humour rather than physical strength. His distinctive style inspired several filmmakers and left a lasting impact on South Indian cinema.
His death marks the end of an era in Tamil filmmaking, with tributes pouring in from the film industry and fans across the country.
