- WhatsApp scam uses fake KBC lottery claims and processing fees
Hyderabad: KBC Lottery fraud cases have surfaced in Hyderabad after cybercriminals allegedly cheated two victims by promising fake lottery winnings. The victims later approached the Cybercrime unit of the Hyderabad police and filed complaints.
In the first case, a 71 year old man was duped of Rs 4.4 lakh in the Kaun Banega Crorepati lottery fraud. According to his complaint, he received a WhatsApp call on October 15, 2025. The caller identified himself as Abhishek and claimed the victim’s mobile number had won a KBC lottery.
The fraudster told him that his number was selected with ticket number 8891. He also promised that Rs 1.25 crore would be transferred to his account. However, the caller demanded money for different charges. Believing the claim, the elderly man paid Rs 4.4 lakh over time. Later, he realised the fraud and approached the police.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under sections 66 (C) and 66(D) of the IT Act. They also invoked sections 318 (4) (cheating), 319 (2) (Cheating by Impersonation), 338 (forgery), and 340(2) (Using as genuine a forged document) of BNS.
Meanwhile, in another similar KBC Lottery fraud, a 40 year old woman from Somajiguda in Hyderabad was allegedly cheated of Rs 42.7 lakh. According to the complaint, the fraud began in 2023. She approached the Cybercrime unit on February 4 and reported the incident.
The fraudsters contacted her through WhatsApp. They claimed she had won Rs 1.3 crore in a KBC lucky draw. They also sent her a picture of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Abhisek Bachchan holding a cheque of Rs 1.3 crore.
According to the police, the accused demanded money as a processing fee and other charges. They also sent a fake notice in the name of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The notice demanded Rs 1.15 lakh as a clearance fee.
Police said both cases are under investigation. Authorities have urged caution regarding such lottery fraud messages.
