Hyderabad: Khaleda Zia funeral will be held on Wednesday, as Bangladesh announced three days of state mourning following the death of the former prime minister. The decision came after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation on Tuesday. He also declared a one day general holiday on the day of the funeral prayers. Therefore, the country will observe official mourning alongside the funeral.
In his televised address, Yunus appealed to the public to maintain discipline and order during the funeral and the mourning period. He stressed the need for cooperation during the observance of formalities. Meanwhile, authorities prepared for nationwide observances linked to the Khaleda Zia funeral and related events.
“At the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, I declare three days of state mourning and a one-day general holiday tomorrow on the day of her Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers),” he said. The announcement formally set the schedule for the funeral and the mourning period. Therefore, the Khaleda Zia funeral will take place amid official state observances.
Khaleda Zia, the longtime chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a three time prime minister, died earlier in the day in Dhaka after a prolonged illness. She was 80. Yunus also acknowledged the public grief following her death. He urged citizens to remain calm and patient during the mourning period. “I know that all of you are deeply saddened at this time. I hope that you will show patience during this time of mourning and cooperate with all those concerned who are involved in observing the formalities, including her Namaz-e-Janaza,” he said. His message focused on order and cooperation.
