Hyderabad: Universities around the world have been the bedrock of innovation in a variety of fields and we still recall names like Nalanda and Takshashila whenever we mention universities of India. This is why it is important to have these universities if we want to encourage more entrepreneurship and innovation, said K T Rama Rao, Telangana IT and Industries Minister at the virtual launch of Mahindra University (MU) in Hyderabad.
The Minister urged the Mahindra Group to look at five aspects in order to make it a one-of-its-kind place. He said that rather than being the run-of-the-mill university, MU should concentrate on encouraging innovation in a big way, secondly provide online-based teaching and remote lectures along with virtual mentoring sessions. Thirdly, he said the university must start looking at linking course credit to the practical knowledge which eventually encourages people to work in real-life projects, fourth is to provide manufacturing expertise to the students and finally not to be too obsessed with the idea of examination and find a right balance for the students.
MU, which is part of the Mahindra Educational Institutions (MEI), a not-for-profit subsidiary of Tech Mahindra, is first of the five autonomous universities envisioned by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for Telangana and it will spread across 130-acre in Hyderabad. It will offer undergraduate, post graduate and PhD courses.
As part of the immediate roadmap, the University will launch the School of Management, School of Law, Indira Mahindra School of Education in 2021-22 while School of Media & Liberal Arts and School of Design in 2023-24. An estimated 4,000 students and over 300+ faculty members will be in place across the various Schools at Mahindra University over the next five years.
Speaking about the University, Prof Yajulu Medury, Vice-Chancellor, Mahindra University said, “Apart from offering interdisciplinary majors and programmes, MU will also develop Centres of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security by partnering with the State government. MU already has a Supercomputer Lab with an advanced NVidia GPU-based supercomputer, the DGX-1 and has a Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CAI), a Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) and a Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure and Systems (CSIS).”
