- Excise department reports record revenue in just one month
- Festive season and new liquor policy boost collections across the state
Hyderabad, Nov 6 (Maxim News): The Telangana State Excise Department has recorded unprecedented revenue, collecting Rs. 6,348 crore in a single month. The surge in income has been attributed to the new liquor policy and festive season sales, which together generated one of the highest single-month earnings ever seen by the department. Officials confirmed that the entire amount has been deposited into the state treasury.
Out of the total revenue, Rs. 3,180 crore came from application and license fees collected under the new liquor policy. With a series of festivals in October driving high consumer demand, liquor sales added another Rs. 3,168 crore to the government’s coffers. The rapid increase in revenue levels has even surprised officials familiar with excise collections.
The government had earlier invited applications for the issuance of new licenses to 2,620 liquor shops across Telangana for a period of two years. Under the revised policy, the application fee was raised from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh. Two years ago, 1.32 lakh applicants brought in Rs. 2,645 crore in total revenue. This time, despite the hike in fees, 95,628 applicants competed for licenses, generating Rs. 2,868.8 crore from application sales alone.
Traders who secured licenses through the lottery process paid one-sixth of their license fee upfront, contributing an additional Rs. 313 crore to the treasury as the first installment. Meanwhile, October’s liquor sales reached Rs. 3,168 crore, compared to Rs. 2,987 crore during the same month last year. This remarkable growth pushed total monthly earnings to Rs. 6,348 crore.
The sharp rise in excise revenue has given a welcome boost to the state’s finances. Contractors and suppliers have expressed hope that pending bills will now be cleared quickly, given the substantial inflow of funds. According to department sources, the strong sales and policy-driven collections have eased pressure on the government treasury after months of slower receipts.
