Local Body Elections Intensify as Parties Recalibrate Strategy
Local body elections | Hyderabad, Dec. 13: The state’s local body political contest has intensified following the declaration of first phase sarpanch election results, prompting major parties to reassess their strategies for the upcoming rounds.
While the ruling Congress secured a significant number of sarpanch posts, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi also managed to win several seats, leading TPCC leaders to closely monitor the second and third phases.
In response, senior Congress leaders have begun engaging with party representatives in regions scheduled to vote on the 14th and 17th of this month.
They are advising local leaders that improved coordination and increased effort could help the party secure additional seats.
With just one day remaining for the second phase of polling, Congress leaders have urged cadres to intensify grassroots campaigning to consolidate their advantage.
Although Congress emerged stronger in the first phase, BRS leaders were unsettled by their lower than expected performance.
Internal discussions within the party suggest that stronger mobilisation might have produced better results.
Consequently, BRS leadership is now focusing on motivating local leaders in the remaining phases. Both Congress and BRS are aiming to maximise seat share as the elections progress.
Parties Push Grassroots Strength After Phase One Results
Congress leaders have reportedly cautioned MLAs and in charges that welfare schemes implemented over the past two years must translate into more sarpanch victories across the state. They stressed that Congress backed candidates should defeat BRS nominees in most villages.
Sources said some leaders were strongly warned that any deviation from expected outcomes would not be taken lightly.
Party leaders also emphasised that strong grassroots organisation is essential for winning future elections. They instructed local units to ensure villagers understand that development works are being implemented through the Congress government.
Leaders were advised to pacify rebel candidates and dissatisfied aspirants while preventing defections. In some cases, they were encouraged to bring independents back into the party fold to avoid vote splits.

The first phase also produced striking political contrasts, with several MLAs winning assembly segments by large margins but failing to secure victories in their own villages. This trend has sparked public debate, with many questioning how leaders who cannot influence outcomes in their native villages can maintain control across entire constituencies.
Political analysts note that local level politics often differs sharply from state level dynamics, where personal accessibility and long standing village relationships matter more.
Several former ministers and senior leaders also failed to ensure victories for their preferred sarpanch candidates in their home villages.
Analysts say sidelining long time local workers and promoting family members or new faces often results in internal dissent and independent candidates entering the fray.
In the first phase, Congress candidates lost in the home villages of Mahabubabad MLA Murali Naik and Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy.
BRS backed candidates were defeated in the native villages of former MLAs Sunke Ravi Shankar and Gongidi Sunitha, as well as former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao.
Congress supported candidates won in the home villages of ministers Sridhar Babu, Adi Srinivas, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Uttam Kumar Reddy, and Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukender Reddy.
Across the state, elections concluded for 4,235 villages in the first phase. Congress won 2,864 sarpanch posts, BRS secured 1,143 seats, and the BJP managed victories in 185 villages.
