Local Body Elections Likely By End Of September; PAC Meeting On Aug 23

Local Body Elections | Hyderabad, August 18: The ruling party is engaged in discussions over conducting local body elections by the end of next month.

Sources indicate that some leaders have urged the government to utilize the time available, as the High Court has directed that the elections be completed by the end of September.

Meanwhile, PCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud is insisting that elections should only be held after implementing 42% reservation for BCs. In this regard, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has suggested convening a meeting of the State Congress Political Affairs Committee (PAC) on August 23 to collect opinions from senior leaders before taking a final decision.

On Sunday, Mahesh Kumar Goud, along with Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and former MP V. Hanumantha Rao, met the Chief Minister at his Jubilee Hills residence to discuss the issue. Reportedly, some ministers are pressing for immediate elections.

It is learned that the leaders informed the CM that since the BC reservation bill has been passed in the Assembly and sent to the President, the government should demonstrate its commitment to the cause.

The meeting also reviewed the lack of response from the Centre regarding BC reservations and debated whether the party should go to polls under these circumstances.

Mahesh Kumar Goud is said to have suggested exploring the possibility of seeking more time from the High Court if required.

CM Revanth Reddy reportedly noted that since it is unclear how long the Centre will delay BC reservations, the matter will be discussed in the PAC meeting before arriving at a decision.

Focus on Strengthening the Party at the Grassroots

The meeting also covered strategies to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. The CM instructed the PCC chief to address differences between leaders who migrated from other parties and the old Congress cadre in some constituencies.

Mahesh Kumar Goud stated that the PCC disciplinary committee is probing leaders involved in anti-party activities. Party sources said the meeting resolved to ensure unity among leaders and work collectively with local body elections approaching.
