Local Body Elections To Be Held In Telangana In December?
- Cabinet decides local body elections after Public Administration Week
- Controversy over BC reservation, High Court refuses 42 percent quota
Hyderabad: The Telangana Cabinet has decided to move forward with local body elections, aiming to conduct them soon after the upcoming Public Administration Week. The week-long event will be held from December 1 to 9, and officials have approved holding the elections after it concludes. Therefore, it is likely that the much-awaited notification for local body elections will be issued in December, marking a key political event for the state.
According to the latest decisions, authorities expect to hold the sarpanch elections first, followed by the MPTC and ZPTC polls. The state has seen a gap of about 20 months since the tenure of the previous local bodies ended. This delay has prompted significant political discussions and public curiosity about when the elections would finally take place. Meanwhile, the election process is expected to restore active local governance at the grassroots level.
However, controversy surrounds the reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in these polls. Recently, the issue of granting 42 percent reservation to BCs became highly contentious. The Telangana High Court addressed this issue and refused to approve the 42 percent quota for BCs. The court stated that allocating this reservation without collecting proper empirical data is not valid, causing concern among various community representatives and political groups.
The court’s decision and the Cabinet’s plan have now set the stage for an eventful election season in Telangana. Meanwhile, all stakeholders await the official notification in December, which will clarify the schedule and the reservation policy. Political observers expect the election to shape the future direction of local governance in the state.
