- Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari face off again
- Babanipur seat set for key West Bengal election battle
Hyderabad, March 19: The West Bengal Assembly elections are set for a high-stakes contest, as Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari will once again face each other from the same seat. Both leaders will contest from the Babanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee is currently the sitting MLA from Babanipur. Meanwhile, both leaders had earlier contested from Nandigram in the 2021 elections. At that time, Suvendu Adhikari won the seat. Mamata Banerjee lost by a margin of 2,000 votes. However, she later returned to the Assembly by winning the by-election from Babanipur.
The upcoming contest has drawn attention. It is significant that both leaders are choosing to compete directly again. Meanwhile, major political parties have begun announcing their candidates after the election notification. The ruling Trinamool Congress has already released its full list.
The TMC announced candidates for all 294 Assembly seats on Tuesday. Party president Mamata Banerjee and TMC General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee jointly made the announcement in Kolkata. Out of the total candidates, 52 are women. The list also includes 95 SC and ST candidates.
Elections in West Bengal will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Meanwhile, counting of votes will be held on May 4. The elections mark the final phase of the current election cycle.
The political contest remains intense. The BJP is making efforts to come to power in the state. Meanwhile, the TMC is aiming to secure a fourth consecutive term. Therefore, the Babanipur seat is expected to witness a closely watched battle.
Babanipur has remained a stronghold for Mamata Banerjee. She has been winning from this seat continuously since 2011. The constituency again becomes central to the political contest as both leaders prepare for another direct face-off.
