Maoist Surrender Expected To Rise In Telangana Next Year
- Maoist surrender trend grows as Telangana police intensify outreach
- Maoist surrender policy and police efforts show results in Telangana
Hyderabad: The Telangana police expect more underground CPI Maoist cadres to surrender before the government next year, Director General of Police B Shivadhar Reddy said. He stated that sustained outreach efforts and the weakening of the Maoist movement have led to a steady rise in surrenders. Therefore, police believe the trend will continue in the coming months.
Speaking on the issue, the Telangana DGP said a total of 509 underground CPI Maoists have surrendered before the Telangana police so far. This group includes nine central committee members, 11 State committee members, three divisional committee members, 17 DVCMs and 57 PPCMs. He said most of those who surrendered were not from Telangana. Out of the total, 483 cadres are from Chhattisgarh, while 24 are from Telangana. One cadre each is from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
The DGP said that several cadres from Telangana are still active. “Fifty-three members from Telangana are still working in CPI (Maoists). Through different channels, including through their relatives, acquaintances and friends, we are suggesting to them to surrender. It might take some time,” said Telangana DGP B Shivadhar Reddy. He explained that police continue to use peaceful communication to encourage them to return to the mainstream.
Meanwhile, the DGP responded to a question on the Union government’s deadline to end CPI Maoist activity by March 2026. He said the state police will act as per the directions issued by the government. He also stated that the Maoist movement has lost ground across the country. “There is no scope for the resurgence. Neither is there any support for them on ground nor is there any recruitment happening,” he added.
The DGP further highlighted the Telangana government’s surrender policy for CPI Maoists. Under the policy, surrendered cadres receive cash benefits and support to help them lead a decent livelihood. He said Maoists who carry a reward are given the full reward amount at the time of surrender. Therefore, police believe the policy plays a key role in encouraging cadres to give up violence and rejoin society.
Police officials said continued coordination and outreach will remain a priority. They also stressed that surrender remains the preferred path for those still underground.
