MLC Kavitha Makes Remarks On Musi River Development Project

Hyderabad, Dec 17 (Maxim News):  During a heated discussion in the Telangana Legislative Council, BRS MLC Kalavakunta Kavitha made surprising remarks about the Musi River Development Project.  She raised serious concerns about the government’s approach, transparency, and communication regarding the funding of the project and the displacement of families living along the river.

Kavita questioned the government’s claim that detailed project reports (DPRs) were still being prepared. However, she alleged that the government had already approached the World Bank seeking ₹4,100 crore for the project. “Is it true that the government asked the World Bank for help?” he asked.

Recently, the government also informed the council that the estimated cost of the Musi canal project is ₹14,100 crore. Kavitha sought an explanation on how the state government, led by CM Revantha Reddy, sent such a proposal to Union Minister Kishan Reddy asking for help at the center, adding that the DPRs were incomplete.

“If the government has gone to the World Bank and asked for centralized help, why is it confusing the council and the public?” He asked whether he would file a rights suit against the government if such an unfair approach continued.

Kavitha also expressed grave concern over the displacement of 309 families living on the banks of the Musi River. Although the government claimed that these families left the area voluntarily, it pointed to harrowing videos as evidence contradicting this claim.

She demanded that the government produce documents signed by these families, if any, acknowledging that they had agreed to leave. “181 Family confirming their consent to leave. “The claim that 181 families voluntarily demolished their homes is laughable,” she said, urging the government to adopt a more humane approach to handling the issue.

Raising another crucial question, Kavitha asked whether the government plans to provide financial assistance for those whose homes were demolished. “Will the government pay EMIs for the loans on the demolished houses?” she questioned.

She emphasized the need for the government to act with sympathy and consider the human impact of the project. The BRS MLC urged the government to prioritize transparency and fairness in its dealings with displaced families and provide clarity on the Musi River project’s funding and implementation.
