Modi govt is neglecting agriculture sector: KCR

Hyderabad, Aug.27 (NSS): Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao called upon the farmers community to come together and fight unitedly against the Modi government at the Centre which has been neglecting the agriculture sector since it came to power.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with National Farmers Unions leaders from 26 States on the current situation in the agricultural sector in the country, at Pragathi Bhavan here on Saturday. He also discussed about measures taken by Telangana Government in development of irrigation, agricultural and power sectors.

Speaking on the occasion, KCR lamented that even though the country had completed 75 years of Independence, farmers were still struggling to continue in the profession and the agriculture sector was continuously being neglected by the successive governments at the Centre.

He alleged that the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to meet the aspirations of farmers in the country and asked the Centre to review its lopsided policies against the agriculture sector.

” If everything was the right, why farmers launched protests across the country and why Narendra Modi tendered an apology to farmers,” KCR questioned.

The Chief Minister also asked the farmers union leaders to think about why the issues of farmers are being neglected and why the Centre is not taking any initiative to resolve problems of the agriculture sector.

He stated that the country has abundant water resources and there is availability of 70,000 tmcs of water, in which 10,000 tmcs for drinking water and 40,000 tmcs for irrigation purposes will be enough to meet the demand. However, due to lack of policies and inefficient government at the Centre, the country still faces the shortage of water for both drinking and irrigation needs, KCR said.

About 100 farmers union leaders took part in the meeting. The Chief Minister had also lunch with the leaders of the national farmers’ associations.

Farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Jharkhand and others States had visited Mallanna Sagar project in Siddipet as part of their three- day study tour to Kaleshwaram project and agricultural reforms in Telangana.

Rythu Bandhu Samithi president Palla Rajeshwar Reddy had briefed that the World’s Largest lift irrigation project was completed within a short span 3.5 years.

On the occasion, the farmers hailed the Telangana Government’s commitment in constructing a project at height of 557 metres and facilitating sufficient supply of water to the farming community and drinking water to households. (NSS)
