Monsoons Dengue and Viral Fevers: The Critical Role of Rehydration
- Surge in Dengue and other viral infections: Experts advise caution and adequate hydration with fluids, electrolytes and energy
Hyderabad, Telangana — As most parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana witness heavy monsoons, the season has brought a surge in infectious diseases like dengue, malaria, and typhoid. Telangana has witnessed a significant rise in dengue cases, with 1078 cases recorded in June, and over 800 cases recorded in July alone.

The monsoon with heavy rainfall and humidity creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, which leads to outbreaks of such diseases. Dengue is caused by a virus, and Malaria is caused by a parasite; both are transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Typhoid, on the other hand, is caused by bacteria and is usually spread through contaminated food or water. These diseases, collectively referred to as tropical fevers result in high fever which leads to increased sweating and rapid breathing, resulting in significant fluid loss as well as depletion of crucial electrolytes such as sodium and potassium.
Each degree Celsius rise in temperature above 39°C (102 °F) in adults can lead to a 25% increase in fluid losses via sweating & breathing. Older adults are especially susceptible to dehydration during the febrile phase of dengue. Additionally, the illness often reduces appetite and causes vomiting, further exacerbating dehydration. This rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes necessitates immediate and accurate replacement to prevent serious health complications.

Dehydration resulting from these tropical fevers can vary from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions like shock. Symptoms such as extreme thirst, dry mouth, and fatigue can quickly escalate, severely impairing physiological functions and potentially leading to fatal outcomes if not addressed promptly.
“In managing tropical fevers, addressing dehydration effectively requires more than just replenishing fluids or drinking water. To support holistic recovery from such tropical fevers requires balanced restoration of electrolytes and energy. Ready-to-serve solutions like ORSL® are scientifically formulated electrolyte drinks that provide a known quantity of electrolytes as well as energy in the form of glucose to help restore fluid balance, which is essential for recovery,” explains Dr. Priti Thakor, Head of Medical Safety Sciences (India) Restorative and Digestive Health (APAC), Kenvue. “These solutions are designed as adjuvants to provide the necessary Fluid, Electrolytes, and Energy (FEE) needed to support individuals in their recovery from non-diarrheal dehydration during these diseases.”

ORSL® Advanz Care ranges with certain variants like ORSL® Immunity+ and ORSL® Rehydrate+ electrolyte drinks can support faster recovery by helping replenish fluids, electrolytes, and Immunonutrients during such tropical fevers. While ORSL® Rehydrate+ electrolyte drink offers optimal concentration of electrolytes and glucose with zero-calorie stevia which is well known to be suitable for individuals with diabetes, and tropical fevers while recently launched, ORSL® Immunity+ electrolyte drink with its unique formulation comprising of essential electrolytes and micronutrients like Zinc and Selenium to support hydration and immune function respectively.
As the number of cases continues to rise, public health authorities are emphasizing the need for prevention and timely medical intervention. Early detection of Dengue, recognizing the signs of dehydration and subsequent hydration management, and seeking medical advice promptly are essential steps in preventing severe complications. To prevent the spread of the epidemic, community awareness, prompt measures around mosquito control, and the use of repellents, are strongly advocated to reduce the risk of infection.
As the monsoon season progresses, being well-prepared and informed is essential for protecting public health against these dangerous diseases.
