Mumbai Mosques Turn to ‘Azan App’ Amid Loudspeaker Restrictions, Bringing Real-Time Call to Prayer to Devotees
Mumbai/Hyderabad, June 29 (Maxim News): In response to growing restrictions on the use of loudspeakers, several mosques in Mumbai have embraced a digital solution — the ‘Online Azan’ mobile app — to deliver the traditional call to prayer (Azan) directly to the faithful in real time.
Developed by a Tamil Nadu-based tech firm with a team of IT professionals from Tirunelveli, the app allows users to hear the live Azan from their local mosque, streamed directly to their smartphones at the exact moment it is recited.
The move comes after police enforcement on the use of loudspeakers at religious places, including Juma Masjid in Mahim, where officers reportedly warned mosque authorities that using loudspeakers could lead to legal action. As a result, the mosque briefly shut down its sound system, prompting the need for an alternative.
Technology Meets Tradition
The Online Azan app is available for free on both Android and iOS platforms. Once downloaded and configured, the app automatically streams the Azan at scheduled times from registered mosques.
“The initiative ensures the spiritual connection remains unbroken, especially for the elderly, ailing, or homebound worshippers who may not be able to physically attend the mosque or hear the call due to sound restrictions,” said a representative from Juma Masjid.

The app also offers prayer time notifications, functioning like a smartwatch alert, ensuring users stay on track with their daily prayers.
Community Response
Worshippers have welcomed the innovation, calling it a “timely and thoughtful” solution. “Even when loudspeakers are turned off, we can now hear the Azan from our own mosque on our mobile phones,” said one resident of Mahim.
Several other mosques across Mumbai have also registered with the app, and interest is growing, especially ahead of major religious observances like Ramzan, when communal prayers and calls to worship are more frequent.
As more mosques explore the use of technology to navigate legal and social challenges, the Online Azan app marks a significant step in digitizing religious practices while respecting civic regulations.
