He was elected MP for the third time from Kota Bundi seat in Rajasthan. So far in the history of the country, no MP has served as speaker for two consecutive terms.  His victory was assured due to the numerical strength of the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, soon after the proceedings of the House began, Prime Minister Modi proposed the name of Om Birla for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the House.  It was supported by many including Rajnath Singh.  This is the first time since 1976 that the Lok Sabha has been elected to the post of Speaker.  Congress member Kodikunil Suresh contested as opposition candidate against NDA candidate Om Birla.  In independent India,  the Speaker of the Lok Sabha was elected only thrice in 1952, 1967, and 1976.

In 1952, congress member GV Malalankar was elected as the first Lok Sabha Speaker.  this time, no consensus could be reached between the government and the opposition parties regarding the selection of the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.  This is why elections are necessary.  This is the first show of strength between the government and the opposition after the formation of the NDA government for the third time in a row under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi says “I would like to congratulate you for your successful election that you have been elected for the second time.  I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire Opposition and the INDI Alliance.  This House represents the voice of India’s people and you are the final arbiter of that voice.  The government has political power but the opposition also represents the voice of India’s people and this time, the opposition represents significantly more voice of the Indian people than it did last time.  The opposition would like to assist you in doing your work.  We would like the House to function often and well.  Cooperation must happen based on trust, the voice of the Opposition must be allowed to be represented in this House.  (Maxim News)
