New Amended Waqf Bill To Be Presented In Lok Sabha On April 2
Delhi/Hyderabad, April 1 (Maxim News): The amended Waqf Bill, which was sent to a joint parliamentary committee in August 2024, is scheduled to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on April 2, sources told. The bill previously faced strong opposition.
Senior BJP ministers are expected to hold discussions with INDI Alliance leaders before the bill is presented in Parliament. The ongoing Budget session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on April 4. The bill must be passed by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to take effect
The legislation seeks to restructure the governance of Waqf boards, which manage properties designated for religious and charitable purposes within the Muslim community. The proposal has led to a political dispute, with opposition leaders criticising it as unconstitutional and biased against Muslims.
The Union Cabinet recently cleared the bill after incorporating recommendations from the joint committee, setting the stage for its parliamentary debate. The bill was originally introduced in Lok Sabha by Rijiju before being sent to the committee in August 2024.
The parliamentary panel approved the report by a majority vote. However, 11 opposition MPs on the committee objected and submitted dissenting opinions. The 655 page report was presented to both Houses of Parliament earlier this month.
Earlier in the day, Rijiju said the government was fully prepared to table the amended bill and accused some political parties and organisations of trying to create unrest and mislead the public about its provisions.
There are some groups, especially people from political parties, trying to mislead people over the Waqf Amendment Bill. I want to clearly tell them not to lie and read the bill properly. India is a democratic country, everybody has the right to speak, but there should not be an attempt to mislead people by talking wrong. Waqf Bill will be coming up, we are identifying those groups. This is not good for our country,” Rijiju said.
The bill has triggered a political dispute. Some have called it “unconstitutional,” while ruling party leaders have defended it as necessary to ensure transparency and protect Waqf assets from misuse. (Maxim News)
