New Year Drunk Driving Checks At 100 City Locations
Hyderabad, Dec 28 (Maxim News): Hyderabad police have announced New Year drunk driving checks at 100 locations across the city as part of intensified enforcement measures ahead of December 31. The drive aims to ensure road safety during New Year celebrations and prevent accidents caused by alcohol consumption. Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar made the announcement while appealing to the public to cooperate with police and follow traffic rules.
The police commissioner said that enforcement had already begun well in advance. According to him, city police started conducting drunk driving checks from December 24 in the run up to New Year’s Eve. He made it clear that violators would face strict consequences. Emphasising personal responsibility, Sajjanar said, “City police started drunk driving checks on Dec 24 in the run-up to Dec 31. Those caught driving under the influence of alcohol will face severe consequences. Whether you want to start the year with a bang by breaking the rules or face police action, the choice is yours,” he said.
Focus on drunk driving and drug monitoring
Meanwhile, police also announced parallel efforts to control drug related activities during the festive period. Officials said that the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H NEW) had started monitoring drug peddlers to reduce drug smuggling in the city. Police stated that this monitoring is part of broader preventive steps taken during large public celebrations, when the risk of substance abuse often increases.
According to police data shared during the announcement, enforcement actions and counselling have been ongoing throughout the year. Officials said that 52,803 drivers caught for drink driving were given counselling in 2025. Police highlighted these figures to show their emphasis on awareness along with enforcement.
Road accident data and action against minors
Police also shared comparative road safety data. This year, 2,679 road accidents were registered in Hyderabad, compared to 3,058 accidents in 2024. Officials pointed to this decline while stressing the role of regular checks and strict action against violations.
In addition, police said that 7,808 minors were caught driving vehicles during the year. After registering cases, charges were filed in 5,818 cases against parents or vehicle owners. Officials said such action was necessary to ensure accountability and discourage repeated violations.
Therefore, police once again urged citizens to avoid drunk driving, follow traffic rules, and cooperate with enforcement teams so that the New Year celebrations remain safe and incident free across Hyderabad. (Maxim News)
