- H-NEW deports Nigerian student over visa overstay and drug links
- Hyderabad police blacklist offender after probe into narcotics network
The Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) on Wednesday deported a Nigerian national, identified as Onyeukwu Kelechi Victor, aged 28, for overstaying in India and for his links with drug peddling networks. Police said his activities were seen as a threat to national security.
According to officials, Victor, who hails from Enugu State in Nigeria, entered India in October 2021 on a student visa to pursue a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) course in Bengaluru. However, due to financial difficulties, he dropped out and became associated with a Nigeria-based drug syndicate. He allegedly supplied drugs in Bengaluru and Hyderabad for commission.
Investigators discovered that Victor’s visa expired in April 2024, but he continued to reside in the country illegally. He was detained by H-NEW personnel in Banjara Hills while accompanying a suspected drug peddler. “Though no contraband was seized from him, he failed to produce valid documents for his stay. Following an inquiry, he admitted to overstaying in India. With assistance from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office officials, an exit permit was issued and he was blacklisted from re-entering India,” said Y.V.S. Sudheendra, DCP, H-NEW.
Since 2022, H-NEW has deported 23 foreign nationals for illegal stay and drug-related offenses. This includes 15 Nigerians, three Sudanese, two Ivorians, one Tanzanian, and one Moroccan citizen. In 2025 alone, 11 individuals, including eight Nigerians, have been deported on similar grounds.
Officials added that since 2022, the wing has arrested 33 foreign nationals involved in narcotics cases, of whom 20 are Nigerians. Authorities appealed to the public to stay alert and share any information on drug abuse or peddling with H-NEW at 8712661601.
