‘No Ban On The Hijab’, Karnataka Govt. Clarifies

Delhi/Hyderabad, Nov 15 (Maxim News): Following reports of a ban on hijab during government board and corporations’ recruitment exams, the Karnataka government has issued a clarification stating that there is no such ban in place.

Misinterpretation of new rules

Minister for Higher Education M.C. Sudhakar addressed the misinterpretation of the new rules, emphasizing that they are solely intended to prevent malpractice during exams, such as cheating using Bluetooth devices. He further clarified that hijabs do not cover the mouth, making it impossible to utilize Bluetooth devices under it.

Previous BJP govt’s ban

The Karnataka Examination Authority had earlier issued a notification outlining the dress code for recruitment exams, which seemingly prohibited hijabs. However, the government’s clarification has dispelled any ambiguity and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity.

The issue of hijabs in educational institutions has been a contentious one in Karnataka, with the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government imposing a ban that sparked widespread protests and legal challenges. The current Congress government has distanced itself from the BJP’s stance and reiterated its support for religious freedom.

Criticism from AIMIM and National Conference

AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the Congress government’s initial decision to uphold the BJP’s hijabs ban, labeling it as a hypocritical move that aligns with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideology.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah echoed the sentiment, urging Congress leaders to actively work towards revoking the BJP’s hijabs ban. He questioned the government’s interference in personal matters and highlighted the disproportionate impact such policies have on the Muslim community.

Welcome step towards inclusivity

The Karnataka government’s clarification on hijabs in recruitment exams is a welcome step towards ensuring equal opportunities for all aspirants. By addressing the misinterpretation of the new rules and reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity, the government has demonstrated a willingness to uphold the rights of its citizens.
