The decision emerged after a meeting of opposition members at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Left Front MP NK Premchandran confirmed the plan later. He said the opposition remains committed to raising the issue in Parliament. Therefore, parties are considering the no confidence motion as a collective step.

Premchandran alleged that Speaker Om Birla denied Rahul Gandhi an opportunity to speak in the Lok Sabha. He also alleged that the Speaker made objectionable remarks against women opposition MPs and ordered their suspension. According to him, these actions forced the opposition to consider the motion.

Meanwhile, Congress MP KC Venugopal criticised the manner in which the House is being run. He said the functioning appeared partisan and unacceptable. Therefore, the opposition decided to escalate the matter within parliamentary rules.

The controversy traces back to remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha last week. During his speech, Rahul Gandhi referred to comments written by former Army Chief Naravane on the Galwan clash. Since then, the House has witnessed repeated disruptions. However, Speaker Om Birla asked Rahul Gandhi not to quote from an unpublished book.

Although the opposition has a limited presence in the Lok Sabha, leaders said they would still introduce a resolution to register protest against the Speaker. They argued that numbers should not prevent them from expressing dissent. Meanwhile, Speaker Om Birla stated that he personally advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday not to attend the Lok Sabha.

At the same time, proceedings on the motion of thanks to the President’s address continue in the House. The opposition demanded that Rahul Gandhi be allowed to speak on Monday as well. However, protests by opposition members led to repeated disruptions. As a result, the House was adjourned till 2 pm on Monday morning.

The opposition also recalled a similar episode from December 2024. At that time, opposition parties moved a no confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankand. The Deputy Chairman rejected the motion, citing the absence of a mandatory 14 day notice period. He also said Dhankand’s name was not properly mentioned in the notice.

Against this backdrop, the planned no confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla has added to the ongoing political tension in Parliament.
