Meanwhile, he noted that energy markets are currently complex. Therefore, decisions on oil purchases require careful review.

Oil Purchases depend on national interest, says Jaishankar

Jaishankar said Indian oil companies are exploring other parts of the world, including Europe. They are assessing costs, losses, and availability before taking decisions. He added that companies act in ways that suit their interests. Also, he made it clear that political pressures do not determine India’s energy strategy. Instead, national interest guides these oil purchases.

It is known that India recently signed an interim trade agreement with the United States. As part of this development, the US reduced tariffs on Indian imports to 18 percent. In this context, the US announced that the country was committed to stopping purchases of Russian oil. However, India did not respond at that time.

Jaishankar’s latest comments appear to address the US position. Meanwhile, his remarks underline that India views energy security as a strategic matter. He indicated that market conditions remain complex. Therefore, Indian companies continue to weigh options across regions, including Europe. Then, based on cost and availability, they take decisions that align with national interests.
