ONGC Mobilises Emergency Response After Gas Leak Reported at Mori Field in Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi, January 5 (Maxim News): Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has swiftly mobilised its emergency response mechanisms following a gas leak incident reported during workover operations at Well Mori#5 in the Mori Field of Andhra Pradesh on Monday.

According to an official statement issued by ONGC Corporate Communications, the gas leak was reported by the PEC operator Deep Industries Limited during routine workover operations on January 5, 2026. The well is situated in a remote location, with no human habitation within a radius of approximately 500 to 600 metres, significantly reducing the risk to public safety.

ONGC clarified that no injuries or loss of life have been reported as a result of the incident. As a precautionary measure, the affected area has been immediately cordoned off, and cooling operations have been initiated to stabilise the situation.

Preparations Underway for Well Control and Possible Capping

In response to the incident, ONGC has activated its Crisis Management Team (CMT) and Regional Crisis Management Team (RCMT). Preparatory work is currently underway to facilitate well-control operations and, if required, capping of the well to fully contain the gas leak.

The company has also initiated coordination with international well-control specialists. Mobilisation arrangements are being made to support advanced well-control and casing-cutting operations, subject to further site assessment and technical requirements.

ONGC’s senior management and technical experts are closely monitoring the situation on a real-time basis. Additional specialised equipment is being mobilised from nearby ONGC facilities, including Narsapuram, to ensure rapid and effective containment measures.

The public sector energy major emphasised that safety remains its top priority and assured that all necessary technical and operational steps are being taken to bring the situation under control at the earliest. ONGC said further updates will be shared as the situation evolves.

The incident comes amid heightened focus on operational safety and emergency preparedness in India’s oil and gas sector, particularly during complex well-intervention activities.
