Osmania University’s Microbiology Department Celebrates Golden Jubilee with Campus-Wide Microbiome Awareness Campaign

Hyderabad, June 27, 2025 (Maxim News): Marking 50 years of academic excellence, the Department of Microbiology at the University College of Science, Osmania University, launched a dynamic Microbiome Awareness Campaign on Friday in honor of World Microbiome Day. Themed “Microbiome for One Health,” the campaign underscored the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health through the lens of microbiome science.

The celebration commenced at 10:45 AM with a formal inauguration by Prof. G. Prabhakar, Principal of the University College of Science, who unfurled the campaign flag and addressed an enthusiastic gathering. In his speech, Prof. Prabhakar emphasized the vital role of microbiome research in addressing global challenges related to healthcare, climate change, and sustainability.

Interdisciplinary Outreach and Engagement

As part of the campaign, M.Sc. Microbiology and Fermentation Technology students took to the Osmania University campus to raise awareness among their peers. The interactive sessions were held across key institutions including the University College of Engineering, Arts College, and departments such as Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.

The students delivered informative and engaging presentations, shedding light on the human and environmental microbiomes, the importance of microbial diversity, and the difference between beneficial and harmful microbes. The outreach particularly benefited students from non-microbiology backgrounds, who expressed appreciation for learning about practical applications and future opportunities in the field of microbiology.

“This initiative is not just about science—it’s about changing perspectives and showing how microbes are essential allies in health and sustainability,” said a participating student.

Inspiring Scientific Curiosity

The key objective of the event was to spark curiosity and inspire research-oriented thinking among young minds. It also aimed to demystify microbiomes and introduce career pathways in microbiology and biotechnology, positioning Osmania University as a leader in microbiome education in Telangana.

The event was successfully coordinated by Prof. B. Bhima, Head of the Department of Microbiology, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the faculty, supporting staff, and leadership across Osmania University for their cooperation.
