Padma Awards 2025: 139 Individuals Honored for Distinguished Service

On the eve of Republic Day, the Centre announced the recipients of the Padma Awards for 2025, recognizing 139 individuals for their exceptional contributions in various fields. The awards, which are among the highest civilian honors in India, are categorized into three levels: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

Categories of the Padma Awards

The Padma Awards are presented in three distinct categories:

  • Padma Vibhushan: Awarded for exceptional and distinguished service in any field.
  • Padma Bhushan: Conferred for distinguished service of a high order.
  • Padma Shri: Given for distinguished service in a particular field.

These prestigious honors celebrate contributions in areas such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.

Diversity Among the Awardees

This year’s list features a diverse group of recipients, including 23 women and 10 individuals from the categories of foreigners, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). Additionally, 13 posthumous awards were presented to honor individuals who had passed away but whose legacies continue to inspire.

Noteworthy Awardees

One of the most notable recipients is Justice (retired) Jagdish Singh Khehar, the former Chief Justice of India, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his distinguished contributions to the Indian judiciary. Justice Khehar is particularly recognized for his dissenting opinion in the historic 2017 Supreme Court case that led to the abolition of triple talaq in India.
