Parliament Attack Anniversary Recalls Events of December 13, 2001

The terrorist attack occurred during the winter session of Parliament on December 13, 2001. According to the details available, a group of terrorists entered the Parliament premises as part of a planned assault. They arrived in a red Ambassador sedan that carried a sticker approved by the Home Ministry. The vehicle hit the Vice President’s car that was parked within the complex.

After entering the premises, the gunmen got out of the car and began firing. They shot at people who came in their way, creating panic and chaos inside the high security zone. However, alert security personnel responded quickly. They closed all the gates of the Parliament complex and opened fire on the attackers. The exchange of fire continued for about half an hour.

Security Forces’ Response and Investigation Findings

In the fierce gun battle, nine security personnel lost their lives while defending the Parliament. Meanwhile, security forces killed five terrorists during the operation. Later, the investigation into the Parliament attack revealed that Pakistan based terror groups Lashkar e Taiba and Jaish e Mohammad were responsible for the assault.
